Earth Day, an annual global event, observed on April 22, celebrates the environmental movement and raises awareness about pollution and ways to maintain a clean habitat. On May 1,  Kiwanis Clubs of Douglaston and Big Apple joined together to celebrate this significant event with its members at the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Hosted by Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park and organized by the Kiwanis Douglaston Club’s PR manager, Anthony Tam. The event title is “Everyday Is Earth Day'', a mission to educate its members and park goers to keep the park clean and lessen our impact on the environment. Our members are tasked to clean the lawn, where much debris is left by the public. It comes to our surprise that there are many beer bottle caps embedded in the ground and we have to resurface and remove them. After learning how to clean a large area in the park, our members appreciate the hard work done by the park employees each day. “It was a great volunteer experience to work alongside our members on a good day,” Coco said, a member from the Douglaston club who skipped work to participate in the event. On the other hand, the park coordinator wanted us to interact with the parkgoers by distributing the orange bags to them and encouraging them to keep the park clean and join the park volunteer program. “We love our volunteers, our park needs more volunteers to help with our everyday tasks.” Cassandra Hickson, volunteer coordinator. Each volunteer is rewarded with a special edition earth day t-shirt and an earth pin. The gifts are sponsored by the directors and executive team from both clubs.
